We often talk to students and parents about the importance of reading. Professor John Hattie (from the University of Melbourne) talks about how reading provides us with the gateway to life-long learning. It helps to ensure that we are functioning members of the community. At MSS we provide a range of programs to support students in the quest to be the best readers they can be, moving from learning to read to reading to learn. Research clearly highlights the importance of supporting children to read every day, at school and at home. The research is below:

If a child reads………

For 20 minutes a day, a total of 1 800 000 words are read in a year.

The child will achieve a 90th percentile on a standardised reading test.

If a child reads……….

For 5 minutes a day, a total of 28200 words are read in a year.

They will achieve a 50th percentile ranking on a standardised reading test.

If a child reads……….

For 1 minute a day, a total of 8000 words are read in a year.

They will achieve a 10th percentile ranking on a standardised reading test.

This is compelling evidence for us to significantly value the importance of reading in the lives of our students.
